I think that her working through Bark Busters removed any initiative to keep up to date with dog training science and advances, especially because all the Bark Busters brochures and booklets are so out of date with modern training theory. Later I researched her more and found that she had never been accredited by any dog trainer association or anything. It is my understanding that this stuff has been thoroughly debunked by science, so her talking about it just made me cringe because of all the money I gave her. She also talked a great deal about pack mentality, dominance, and how important it is to go first through doors, sleep above your dog, eat before them so that they know who is boss. After everything I had read about dogs learning much better with rewards and how punishments can confuse and hurt, I just didn't trust anything this lady said by the end of our session. But treats and play rewards were not allowed, and even petting as a reward seemed to be frowned upon. If these had been paired with rewarding my dog for good behavior, I might have given them half a chance. In reality they employ mild aversives like making loud noises and throwing beanbags (near the dog) which distract/surprise, and light leash pops which correct bad behavior.
